Charred Timber, with a difference

Yakisugi, otherwise known as Shou Sugi Ban, is an ancient Japanese method of treating timber in order to create a blackened charcoal finish to cladding. In recent years Shou Sugi Ban has become increasingly popular with architects due to its very dark, textured and contemporary finish. But of course, we had to add our own twist.

It is well documented that burning timber is damaging to the environment as harmful fumes and toxins are released into the atmosphere, ultimately reducing the quality of the air we breathe.

As a company we made the decision not to offer conventional charred timber as this goes against our commitment to the environment. We’ve done a lot of research and have come up with our own range of Shou Sugi Ban, the best bit? We don’t burn/char the timber. We simply texture and coat it in a water based coating system. This results in an environmentally friendly alternative that is easy to maintain, full of texture and character and is available in a much wider range of colours.

The Benefits of Factory Finishing

The operation of our vacuum coating machine means we achieve a flawless and consistent finish. Factory finishing offers a range of benefits to end users. Primarily , a reduction in preparation and clean up time as timber arrives fully coated, ready to install. Timber is coated in our purpose-built factory, which is temperature controlled, meaning the weather doesn’t affect the application of coatings, and coating can be carried out year-round.

When producing our charred timber we texture the face of the board in order to create the distressed, contemporary finish.  Timber is then coated in a water based wood stain system which offers an extremely rustic aesthetic which is available in a range of colours, with the option to colour match and produce customised shades on request.

Colours

Unlike traditional charred timber we have the ability to offer a huge range of colours and shades depending on your design requirements. We have a standard range of colours that vary in shades of blacks, browns and greys as well as being able to provide customised shades when required.

Maintenance

Any coating system will require maintenance and the frequency of maintenance is influenced by a number of factors such as, substrate, colour, surface finish, location and weather conditions. Depending on the desired aesthetic of your charred timber the coating can be maintained in order to keep its appearance, alternatively if maintenance isn’t carried out the coating system will eventually fade away leaving the textured timber to weather naturally. We offer our customers full support and guidance when preparing to maintain their coated timber. For more information on maintenance please get in touch.

FAQs

Good design detailing is crucial; for-instance with cladding avoiding ground contact, achieving a design which sheds water at eaves level and ensures adequate airflow behind the cladding and orientating. The selection of good quality, high grade, durable timbers will also assist in maximising the life of your coated product. In-service maintenance is a factor that should be built into your design, planning how maintenance will be carried out at the design stage can save large amounts of time and money later down the line when service maintenance is required. Your coated timber needs to be kept clean in order to prevent the buildup of dirt and surface fungi.
