Opaque Coatings

Opaque coating systems are a solid colour which delivers a consistent finish. Due to the high amounts of pigment in the coating the colour from the grain of the timber is hidden, resulting in a uniform finish to each length of timber.

These coatings vary in film thickness and the amount of coats required depending on the system and manufacturer used.

We will offer the most suitable coating systems for each application depending on a range of factors such as location, timber species, desired aesthetic and maintenance intervals.

The Benefits of Factory Finishing

The operation of our vacuum coating machine means we achieve a flawless and consistent finish. Factory finishing offers a range of benefits to end users.

Primarily , a reduction in preparation and clean up time as timber arrives fully coated, ready to install. Timber is coated in our purpose-built factory, which is temperature controlled, meaning the weather doesn’t affect the application of coatings, and coating can be carried out year-round. All the timber we coat is sanded as standard using our in-line sanding machine prior to it being coated. This means each length of timber has been prepared and processed in exactly the same way from start to finish.

We are audited yearly by the paint manufacturers in order to be approved applicators and ensure the quality of the coating system applied.

Colours

We can have opaque coatings tinted to any RAL, NCS or Farrow and Ball colour code with the option to colour match available when required.

Maintenance

Any coating system will require maintenance and the frequency of maintenance is influenced by a number of factors such as, substrate, colour, surface finish, location and weather conditions. We offer our customers full support and guidance when preparing to maintain their coated timber. For more information on maintenance please get in touch.

All of our coating systems are water based, making them easier to maintain and much more environmentally friendly.

FAQs

Good design detailing is crucial; for-instance with cladding avoiding ground contact, achieving a design which sheds water at eaves level and ensures adequate airflow behind the cladding and orientating. The selection of good quality, high grade, durable timbers will also assist in maximising the life of your coated product. In-service maintenance is a factor that should be built into your design, planning how maintenance will be carried out at the design stage can save large amounts of time and money later down the line when service maintenance is required. Your coated timber needs to be kept clean in order to prevent the buildup of dirt and surface fungi.

Maintenance will vary from project to project and depend on a range of factors. We advise carrying out an annual inspection, either in the spring or later summer/ autumn. This will allow you to visually inspect for any damage to the coating and carry out any necessary repairs to the coating.

In the event that there is damage caused on site to the timber or the coating system then steps must be taken to rectify the issue. For light surface damage brush a coat of the touch-up material supplied with your order over the damaged area. If the damage has damaged the timber you may need to gently prepare the area using very fine sandpaper before applying a coat over the damaged area.

Cleaning should be carried out periodically in order to prevent the build up of dirt and possible algae growth. This can be done using warm soapy water and a microfiber cloth, avoid rubbing hard as this may damage the coating system. Once complete rinse the cladding down with a hosepipe on a gentle setting to remove any bubbles. We recommend cleaning your timber after a few wet/ damp days as it is easier to remove the dirt.

Timber is a natural product and you may experience occasional signs of resin exudation, usually in the summer months. The appearance of resin can vary depending on the species of timber but is generally a thick sticky substance. If exudation occurs let the resin dry on the surface of the timber, avoid trying to remove it while it is still soft. Once it has hardened you can scrape the resin off the timber with a brush. After, use very fine sandpaper to remove any finer bits of resin and then re-coat the area, this will seal the coating system and prevent moisture from being absorbed into the timber.

We offer opaque coatings from a range of coating manufacturers, this allows us to offer the most suitable coating system for each project.
