Charred Timber

Yakisugi, otherwise known as Shou Sugi Ban, is an ancient Japanese method of treating Japanese Cedar in order to create a blackened charcoal finish to cladding. In recent years Shou Sugi Ban has become increasingly popular with architects and homeowners due to its very dark, textured and contemporary finish.

Timber Cladding

Our Charred timber cladding range has been created in order to offer a similar charred timber aesthetic, while overcoming the issues often encountered with the traditional treatment method. Offering our customers a heavily structured (UltraTex ®) surface finish with a factory applied coating system, meaning there is no charred layer to flake or peel over time.

Timber cladding is a natural material and each species has its own characteristics which need to be considered at the design stage in order to optimise performance. Considerations also need to be made to factors such as species, profile, orientation and surface finish in order to specify the correct coating system.

All of our coatings are water based systems which are environmentally friendly and contain low levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Our charred timber cladding systems vary in the film build and amount of coats required depending on the manufacturer and system specification. Our team will specify the most suitable coating system based on the timber species selected, building design, desired aesthetic and various other factors.

Virtual Samples

View samples from the comfort of your home or office using our virtual samples tool. This is the quickest, easiest and most sustainable way of viewing samples. Zoom in and out, tilt to different angles and even download for a later date if needed.

Our process also offers our customers more scope for different shades. While black is most popular, we can also offer our charred timber cladding range in a selection of colours to meet design requirements.

Factory Coating

Factory coating timber cladding prior to delivery is the best way to guarantee a consistent and professional finish. We process our timber products in our purpose built, state of the art timber coating factory using modern methods and application machinery. The timber undergoes vigorous pre-application quality inspections before being prepared via sanding or texturing. Once prepared the timber begins the coating process where it is coated all around in the requisite amount of coats with quality inspections carried out at numerous parts of the process. Once coated the timber then moves to our curing / drying area before final quality checks and being packaged for delivery.

Maintenance

All coating systems will require maintenance in order to maintain aesthetics and performance. We recommend an annual inspection in order to identify early any signs of coating degradation. Cleaning is also recommended as required in order to remove any dirt or air borne pollutants which can become a food source for algae. Maintenance intervals are determined by a range of factors such as the timber species, profile, building location and cardinal direction. For more information about maintenance please contact our specification team.
